Deutschlandradio is a public broadcasting provider with a public service mission and stands for independence, credibility and integrity. In accordance with the State Treaty, Deutschlandradio offers three linear radio programs (Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandfunk Kultur and Deutschlandfunk Nova) as well as digital, usually audio-based content in German.
Deutschlandradio’s mandate covers the whole of Germany. Its services are commercial-free. They provide an objective overview of world events and German reality, present cultural diversity and promote the free formation of individual and public opinion through information, debate and contextualization. The services are also intended to promote a sense of belonging in a unified Germany and to serve the integration of society as a whole in peace and freedom. To this end, a 24-hour radio program is offered daily via DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcast), satellite and, in many regions, also via FM. Numerous non-linear offerings (e.g. podcasts) are distributed via the internet.
The Task: to Visualize the Strategy.
Deutschlandradio adopted its sustainability strategy in spring 2024. The aim of the project with Big Pictury was to create a visualization that appeals to employees and vividly conveys the core elements of the sustainability strategy. The particular challenge for Deutschlandradio as a radio broadcaster was to find a suitable and understandable visualization for a very complex, broad section of its workforce and a process that was not yet known.
For Deutschlandradio, sustainability is a long-term task and the broadcaster intends to continuously develop and expand its activities in this area. The aim is to integrate sustainability into the organizational and operational structure and to establish a sustainability management system. In doing so, Deutschlandradio is proactively facing up to its responsibility as a public institution.
The Realization:
As in all Big Picture development processes, the visual language was developed in several rounds together with the customer and Big Pictury. In doing so, great care was taken to ensure that the presentation was appropriate for Deutschlandradio and that the information to be conveyed to employees was conveyed. The members of the sustainability working group found the collaboration with Big Pictury to be creative, goal-oriented and stimulating. The development process of the Big Picture was also supported by Dr. Thomas Leppert and Dr. Hilke Posor from Heldenrat GmbH. The contact person from Big Pictury was always able to support the Deutschlandradio team with an open ear, creative ideas and swift implementation in a professional and very friendly and open manner.
Now the finished Big Picture is being used on the intranet and at meetings with employees, for example in workshops.

“We supported Deutschlandradio in creating their first sustainability report and developing their sustainability strategy. With our approach, it is always important to us to take people with us in the sustainability transformation.
